This is a very straightforward, no-frills telling of the Coast Guard rescue of several crewmembers of two merchant vessels that both broke in half during the same storm in 1952. Thank you. the finest hours true story

It’s the winter of 1952 and a ferocious Nor’easter is pounding New England with howling winds and seventy-foot seas. What a story! In February 1952, New England was being battered by one of the worst nor'easters in years, and two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, both broke in two. They put themselves in danger trying to save the men on the broken tankers. Admittedly, I tore through it in 2 sessions and enjoyed it very much.

IPA. Two tankers during the same storm broke in half and the coast guard had to rally up and rescue them. It was a little confusing at times because there were two different wrecks so the book jumped around. This piece of history will appeal to those interested in maritime disasters, Coast Guard history, and the history of the Cape. The movie comes out at the end of the month, so read this book now. This was happening during a nor'easter so the waters were very choppy and they had 70 foot seas. Sailing a tiny lifeboat into the teeth of the killer storm, the rescue crew soon loses all navigation. An amazing story about Liberty ships, which are known to break in half in heavy seas. Can the tiny lifeboat save them all? These Coastguard people didn't have to choose to continue the rescue under the conditions they faced in that storm. There is nothing like reading a history or biography book and being so completely transported to another time and place that you find... On the night of February 18, 1952, during one of the worst winter storms that New England has ever seen, two oil tankers just off the shore of Cape Cod were torn in half by the force of the storm. I actually enjoyed this far more than I thought I would. I heard that this is going to be made into a movie. It does not matter if one has an interest in boats to like this book. The seas were worse than they have ever been, a Nor-easter. An inspiring read!!! Rather inspiring story really. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. As I read this book, I wondered if there are people still like this today. Please try your request again later. It was fascinating to read how they were able to pull it off, with little to no technology and in seas that rival the scene of the small fishing boat climbing a tower of water in the perfect storm. Back on shore, four young Coast Guardsmen are issued a suicide mission: save the lives of the stranded seamen. It is a dangerous obstacle in even moderately difficult weather. Congratulations to local writer Michael Tougias for his research an no nonsense writing style. Wow! After a deliberation on the best means of aid, the officer in charge, Daniel Cluff. It sounds like the making of naval folklore, as well as a dramatic motion picture, and it has become just that.eval(ez_write_tag([[468,60],'mensjournal_com-under_first_paragraph','ezslot_6',159,'0','0'])); Engineman second class Andy Fitzgerald, who at the time had spent his service days pulling lobster boats and painting hulls, had driven through the pelting rain to the Chatham Lifeboat Station purely on the possibility that he would be able to take part in an actual rescue. I was riveted by the story of the tiny wooden rescue boat CG-36500 that went into waters it was not designed for, lost its windshield and compass, and yet loaded 36 men (on a ship designed for 12) rode low in tumultuous waves and made it back to shore. A fascinating piece of history this book goes into detail the events of this rescue. Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of, Published

Without a compass and no safe plan to be picked up, Webber made the call to run aground at the nearest beach, an announcement that the Pendleton crew responded to with cheers. As one may infer, with two ships along with a couple of other rescue boats, there were a lot of people. The novel focuses mainly on Bernie Webber and his crew of three other men, who rescued all but one of the stranded on the Pendleton stern, but does tell about the other 3 halves of the ships and how they were or weren't rescued. A great recounting of 3 days in the winter of 1952 when brave coast guardsmen simply "did the job" and rescued dozens from 2 ship wrecks.
