In February 1952, New England was being battered by one of the worst nor'easters in years, and two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, both broke in two. They put themselves in danger trying to save the men on the broken tankers. Admittedly, I tore through it in 2 sessions and enjoyed it very much.

It was a little confusing at times because there were two different wrecks so the book jumped around. This piece of history will appeal to those interested in maritime disasters, Coast Guard history, and the history of the Cape. The movie comes out at the end of the month, so read this book now. An amazing story about Liberty ships, which are known to break in half in heavy seas. Can the tiny lifeboat save them all? These Coastguard people didn't have to choose to continue the rescue under the conditions they faced in that storm. A great recounting of 3 days in the winter of 1952 when brave coast guardsmen simply "did the job" and rescued dozens from 2 ship wrecks.
Rather inspiring story really. Short on boats and crew, boats went out in seas twice their size on what many thought was a death sentence. The coast guards who rescued the shipwrecked crews risked their lives as they ventured out towards waves reaching up to 70 feet high and hurricane winds blowing ice, sleet, and snow at around 60 mph. This is a fast-paced, uplifting story that puts young readers in the middle of the action. It's not clear which is more astonishing: the lengths the Coasties went to in order to save lives (braving 70 foot waves in 36 foot boats) or their humility afterwards with respects to their heroic deeds. Not one but two separate giant T2 tankers had been literally torn apart by nor’easter-driven seas off the coast of Cape Cod, leaving four separate hulls floating in the North Atlantic Ocean.
